Many people are not aware the cell phone makers have an easy method for identifying if a phone has suffered water damage as they normally include some kind of water indicator when making the cell phones.
Normally this a little dot that is white while dry but turns red or pink when wet. This indicator it often fairly easy to find by taking off the back cover and / or the battery but this does vary depending on the phone.
On the iphone for example this is located at the bottom of the headphone socket (you might need to shine a light into see it!)
In order to minimize the damage to the phone when it comes into contact with water you should take the following steps:
1. Move the phone away from the water. The quicker you remove it from the water the greater the chance it won't suffer irreparable damage.
2. Turn the phone off
3. Take the battery out of your phone
4. Take the SIM out
5. Remove anything attached to the phone like headphones cases etc. This helps the phone naturally dry out
6. Use Kitchen towel or other absorbent material to wipe off any excess water
7. This is the most important step, You can do this in different ways depending on what you have available. The best approach is to get some Silica Gel (normally included when you buy a TV or something similar), and your phone in an airtight container then leave for a couple of days. Few people have Silica Gel handy, if this is the case for you, the alternative is to use uncooked rice. By putting the uncooked rice in an airtight bag with your phone the moisture from the phone should be absorbed by the rice.
8. Leave it for a couple of days
9. After 2-3 days try re-attaching the battery and SIM and hopefully you're phone will be as good as new.
10. Ensure this doesn't happen again by making your phone waterproof today.
You may be surprised to know there have been a few different waterproof smartphones released in the last couple of years. If you don't want to replace your phone, you may like to look into Liquipel, they can treat your existing phone to make it waterproof, or alternatively you could go out and buy one of the variety of waterproof cases that are available.
